Coinbase vs Kraken for Beginners (2026): Which Crypto Exchange Is Better?

Kraken publishes the trading rates a beginner pays, from the app's flat 1% fee to Kraken Pro's 0.40%/0.80% first tier; Coinbase prices simple trades per order but is the option of the two in New York and Maine, where Kraken does not operate.

Coinbase vs Kraken: which crypto exchange is better for a beginner in 2026?

For most US beginners, Kraken is the better pick on these criteria because it publishes its trading rates up front: a flat 1% fee plus a spread on Kraken app buys, and 0.40% maker / 0.80% taker on Kraken Pro's first tier (checked October 2026). Coinbase prices simple trades order by order and shows its full Advanced fee table only after you sign in. In New York and Maine, where Kraken does not offer services, Coinbase, which lists licenses in both states, is the option of the two.

The criteria are the ones a first-time buyer runs into: whether the cost of a small purchase is visible before signing up, whether the cheaper order-book rates are published, how much of your staking rewards the exchange keeps, and whether it serves your state. Kraken leads on the first three. Coinbase leads in those two states and says it has no payment-for-order-flow relationships with market makers.

This page is built from each exchange's own fee schedules, help-center disclosures and licensing pages, plus SIPC's guidance, rather than first-hand use. Coinbase's site did not load for our source checks, so every Coinbase quote here comes from the Internet Archive's copies of Coinbase's own pages, captured on September 11, September 19 and October 2, 2026.

What a first purchase costs on each

Kraken app. Kraken's fee schedule says it "charges a 1% trading fee on instant and recurring trades and a 1.5% fee on custom orders". On top of that, the price shown on an instant buy "includes a spread", which Kraken defines as the gap between the market rate and the rate you receive. Paying by card, Apple Pay, Google Pay or ACH can add a payment fee, depending on the method.

Coinbase app. Coinbase does not print a single rate for simple trades. Its disclosure says fees "are calculated at the time you place your order" and can shift with payment method, order size, market conditions, location and asset. Simple buys and sells also carry a spread inside the quoted price. For simple limit orders, Coinbase lists a separate 1% limit order execution fee and says it may also charge a 1.875% Coinbase fee that varies by payment method.

The practical difference for a beginner: Kraken lets you work out the fee before you open an account, while Coinbase shows it at checkout. Coinbase's order preview "shows you the total amount you will pay for the trade, including spread and fees", so compare that total rather than the headline coin price before you confirm.

The cheaper route: Kraken Pro vs Coinbase Advanced

Both exchanges run an order book next to the simple app, and both charge maker and taker fees there. Coinbase's help page gives clear definitions: a taker order is filled immediately at market price, while a maker order is "placed on the order book" and pays the maker fee when it is matched. A buy limit order set below the market price is Coinbase's own example of a maker order.

Kraken Pro publishes its whole table. Makers pay 0.40% and takers 0.80% at Tier 1, and Tier 2 starts at $2.5K of 30-day volume with 0.30% and 0.60%. Your tier follows the better of your 30-day spot volume or your assets held on the platform, and Kraken says discount tiers are assessed after every trade. One catch for app users: volume from Instant Buy does not count toward the 30-day total. See Kraken Pro's current fee tiers.

Coinbase Advanced has no spread because, in Coinbase's words, "you're interacting directly with the order book". Its tiers are based on USD volume over the past 30 days and update hourly, but the help page tells you to sign in "to see the complete fee structure". That makes Kraken the easier of the two to price in advance; with Coinbase you compare after creating an account.

Subscriptions that waive trading fees

Kraken+ costs $4.99 a month after a free 30-day trial. It removes transaction fees on up to $10,000 a month of trading volume, though spreads and payment processing fees still apply. The waiver covers only Buy, Sell and Convert in the Kraken app or website, and Kraken Pro's spot, futures, API and OTC trades sit outside it, so it suits someone who stays in the simple app, not someone moving to the order book.

Coinbase One is the Coinbase equivalent: a subscription that offers "zero trading fees when members buy and sell cryptocurrencies, with certain limitations". Members may still see a spread on some trades, and the benefit does not cover the 1% limit order execution fee. The archived fee page does not list a price, so check the current one in the Coinbase app before subscribing.

Either subscription only pays for itself if the trading fees you would otherwise pay in a month are larger than its price.

Where you live can settle it

Kraken names Maine and New York as the two states whose residents it does not serve. Its licensing page adds narrower limits elsewhere: crypto transfers are unavailable in Indiana, and fiat transfers are unavailable in Indiana, Louisiana, Massachusetts and Utah. Read that list before funding an account.

Coinbase's licensing page says Coinbase, Inc. is licensed in US jurisdictions that include New York, where it lists a virtual currency business license from the New York Department of Financial Services, and Maine, where it lists a money transmitter license. For a beginner in either state, that leaves Coinbase as the option of these two.

Gemini is a third exchange that covers both states: its user agreement places New York residents under Gemini Trust Company and Maine residents under Gemini Moonbase. See Gemini's current fees, or weigh it against Kraken in our Kraken vs Gemini guide.

Staking, custody and what is not protected

Staking commissions. Coinbase charges no fee to stake but keeps a commission on rewards; its standard rate is 35% for ADA, ATOM, AVAX, DOT, ETH, MATIC, SOL and XTZ, with lower rates for eligible Coinbase One tiers. Kraken lists a 20% commission on flexible staking for assets with an on-chain unbonding period and on its Rewards program, while bonded staking commissions depend on the balance staked.

Regulation and custody. Kraken is registered with FinCEN as a money services business and offers custody to eligible clients through Kraken Financial, a Wyoming-chartered special purpose depository institution. Coinbase says trades from a primary balance, apart from its DEX trading feature, run through Coinbase Exchange's central limit order book or competitive auctions, and that it "does not have any payment for order flow (PFOF) relationships with market makers".

Protection. A crypto balance at either exchange is not covered the way a brokerage account is. SIPC's guidance leaves out any digital asset that is not a security, and it records the SEC and CFTC counting bitcoin and ether among digital commodities. Kraken's SIPC membership runs through Kraken Securities, its equities broker-dealer, not through its crypto business.

So which should a beginner open?

  • You live in New York or Maine: Kraken is out, so compare Coinbase with Gemini.
  • You want to know your costs before signing up: Kraken, because its app fee and Pro tiers are public. Compare Kraken Pro's tiers.
  • You expect to place more than a few orders: learn the order book early. Kraken Pro's entry tier is published; Coinbase Advanced has no spread but shows its tiers only after sign-in.
  • You plan to stake: compare the commissions above, since they come straight out of your rewards.

FAQ

Is Kraken cheaper than Coinbase for a small first purchase?

Kraken's cost is known in advance: a 1% fee plus a spread on an instant buy. Coinbase sets its fee when you place the order, so the only fair comparison is the total on each preview screen. If you are willing to place a limit order on Kraken Pro, its first-tier rates of 0.40% maker and 0.80% taker both sit below the app's 1% fee.

Can I open a Kraken account in New York?

No. Kraken's licensing page names Maine and New York as states whose residents it does not serve. Coinbase lists a New York virtual currency license, and Gemini's user agreement covers New York residents.

Is my crypto protected if Coinbase or Kraken fails?

Not by SIPC. SIPC says it does not protect digital assets that are not securities, and it cites the SEC and CFTC naming bitcoin and ether as examples of digital commodities. Read each exchange's custody terms instead.

Where can I see Coinbase Advanced's fee tiers?

Only after signing in. Coinbase's help page points to the Coinbase Advanced fees page inside your account, with tiers based on 30-day USD volume and refreshed hourly.

Does Kraken+ remove fees on Kraken Pro?

No. Kraken limits the Kraken+ waiver to Buy, Sell and Convert in its app or website, so orders placed on Kraken Pro still pay the Pro fee tiers.
