Kraken vs Gemini: Which Crypto Exchange Should You Use in 2026?
Kraken Pro is cheaper at every published tier and lists far more assets; Gemini is a New York-chartered trust company that serves New York and Maine, two states Kraken says it does not. Figures from each exchange's own fee and legal pages, checked October 2026.
Kraken vs Gemini: which crypto exchange should you use?
For most US buyers willing to place their own limit orders, Kraken wins on cost: Kraken Pro's entry tier is 0.40% maker and 0.80% taker, against 0.600% and 1.200% on Gemini ActiveTrader (checked October 2026 on each exchange's fee page). Gemini is the pick in New York or Maine, which Kraken does not serve, or if a New York-chartered trust company matters more than the lowest fee. Neither is cheap in simple mode: Kraken charges a flat 1% plus a spread; Gemini's fee appears only at review.
This comparison is assembled from Kraken's and Gemini's published fee schedules, legal pages and trust documents plus the other named sources, rather than first-hand use, and it is not investment advice. Investing involves risk: Kraken's own fee page states that the unpredictable nature of the crypto-asset markets can lead to loss of funds, and SIPC says it does not protect any digital or crypto asset that does not qualify as a security.
The fee pages side by side (checked October 2026)
Both exchanges run two interfaces: a simple buy-and-sell screen that bundles a spread into the price, and an order-book interface (Kraken Pro, Gemini ActiveTrader) with maker and taker percentages. The table uses the figures each exchange prints today.
| What you pay | Kraken | Gemini |
|---|---|---|
| Simple interface | Flat 1% on instant and recurring trades, 1.5% on custom orders, plus a spread built into the price | A per-order fee shown on the trade review screen, plus a spread on Instant and Recurring orders; no flat rate is published |
| Order-book interface, entry tier | Kraken Pro Tier 1 ($0+ 30-day volume): 0.40% maker / 0.80% taker | ActiveTrader base tier: 0.600% maker / 1.200% taker |
| First discount | Tier 2 at $2.5K+ volume: 0.30% / 0.60% | 0.400% / 0.800% at $10K volume or a $1M asset balance |
| At $10K of 30-day volume | Tier 3 ($10K+ volume or 20k assets on platform): 0.22% / 0.38% | 0.400% / 0.800% |
| At $25K of 30-day volume | Tier 4 ($25K+ or 50k assets on platform): 0.20% / 0.35% | 0.250% / 0.500% ($25K volume or $5M balance) |
| Stablecoin pairs | 0.20% maker and 0.20% taker from $0 volume on FX and stablecoin pairs | 0.00% / 0.00% on RLUSD/USD, USDC/GUSD and GUSD/USD |
| Simple-mode volume counts toward tiers? | No: Instant Buy volume does not count | Tiers use trailing 30-day volume across all order books, or total asset balance |
Two reading notes. Kraken's schedule carries a footnote that fees may be inaccurate if you're using a VPN; the figures above were read from the US without one. Gemini's ActiveTrader schedule is dated September 1, 2026, and its tier rule says that if your 30-day volume and your asset balance qualify for different tiers you get the better of the two, so a large held balance can earn the lower rate without any trading.
Kraken: cheaper tiers, more assets, no service in New York or Maine
Kraken Pro's schedule is a maker-taker system with volume incentives based on your spot volume and your assets on platform in the past 30 days, in the fee page's words, and the discounts start early: Tier 2 at $2.5K+ of 30-day volume already cuts the rate to 0.30% maker and 0.60% taker. The catch for people who start in the app is spelled out on the same page: volume generated with Instant Buy does not count towards the 30 day volume incentives, so a year of one-tap buys earns no discount at all.
On range, Kraken Pro's own page says it opens the door to 400+ assets, with spot, margin and derivatives trading plus staking on web and mobile, and the caveat that margin, futures and opt-in rewards are subject to geographic limitations and eligibility criteria. For US customers the fee schedule is blunter: futures are not available or do not apply to cross-platform tier qualification. US clients can, however, invest in over 11,000 stocks and ETFs commission-free on Kraken Pro; the fee page lists stocks as a US-only product, and Kraken's licensing page says equities trading runs through Kraken Securities LLC, a broker-dealer registered with the SEC and a member of FINRA and SIPC.
Availability is where Kraken loses customers outright. Its licensing page says that at this time Kraken, including Kraken Securities LLC and Kraken Adviser LLC, does not offer services to residents of Maine or New York. In the states it does serve, crypto transfers are not available in Indiana, and fiat transfers are not available in Indiana, Louisiana, Massachusetts and Utah. For US clients generally, Kraken operates under a FinCEN Money Services Business registration held by Payward Interactive, Inc. If none of those restrictions touch you, see current pricing at Kraken Pro and read our note on whether Kraken Pro is worth using over the plain app.
Gemini: the regulated-trust pitch, with a steeper ActiveTrader schedule
Gemini's case rests on structure rather than price. Its Trust Center describes Gemini as a full-reserve exchange and custodian, meaning all customer funds held on Gemini are held 1:1 and available for withdrawal at any time, and states that Gemini Trust Company, LLC is a fiduciary and qualified custodian under the New York Banking Law, licensed by the New York State Department of Financial Services. The same page lists SOC 1 Type 2 and SOC 2 Type 2 exams conducted by Deloitte and an ISO/IEC 27001:2022 certification. The scale figures on that page are modest next to Kraken's: 99 cryptos supported, 8 fiats, 41 countries and 655 trading pairs.
The ActiveTrader schedule dated September 1, 2026 is the sticking point. Its base tier is 0.600% maker and 1.200% taker, higher than Kraken Pro's Tier 1 on both sides, and it only reaches 0.400% / 0.800% at $10K of trailing 30-day volume or a $1M asset balance, a volume at which Kraken Pro is already at 0.22% / 0.38%. Gemini charges maker fees only when a maker order is matched and charges nothing for cancelling one, which rewards patient limit orders. Its stablecoin lane is genuinely free: RLUSD/USD, USDC/GUSD and GUSD/USD pairs trade at 0.00% maker and 0.00% taker.
Gemini mode, the simple interface, publishes no number at all. Its fee page (dated February 15, 2026) says fees are calculated when you place the order, can vary with payment method, order size, market conditions, jurisdiction and asset, and are shown on the trade review screen before you confirm; Instant and Recurring orders also carry a spread in the quoted price. On coverage, Gemini's user-agreement page assigns residents of ID, LA, NY, OH and TX to the Gemini Trust Company agreement and every other state, plus DC and Puerto Rico, to the Gemini Moonbase agreement, so New York and Maine both appear on its lists. See current pricing at Gemini if that profile fits you.
Simple mode versus order book: the decision that outweighs the exchange
On either platform the single largest saving is moving from the simple screen to the order-book interface, not switching exchanges. Kraken's simple fee is a flat 1% plus a spread whose size varies with market volatility, asset type, order size and account activity; Gemini's is a per-order fee plus a spread. Both order-book interfaces charge a fraction of that and let you choose maker pricing by resting a limit order instead of hitting the market with a taker order.
One Kraken-specific wrinkle: Kraken+ members have the 1% waived on up to $10,000 per month of app trades, but that waiver covers the app's Buy, Sell and Convert features, not spot trading on Kraken Pro, and the spread still applies. If you only ever buy a fixed amount on a schedule, the app with Kraken+ can be the simpler path; if you place orders yourself, Pro is the cheaper one.
Custody, security and what nobody protects you from
Kraken Pro's page says securing client assets and privacy has been its number one priority for over a decade; Gemini's Trust Center answers with the full-reserve statement, the NYDFS trust charter, the SOC exams and ISO/IEC 27001:2022. Those are different kinds of assurance, and neither is insurance. SIPC says plainly that it does not protect any digital or crypto asset that does not qualify as a security, and that it does not protect against the decline in value of your securities. Kraken Securities LLC's SIPC membership covers the stock side of a Kraken account, not the crypto side.
If custody risk is what worries you most, the structural answer is to withdraw long-term holdings to a wallet you control. Which exchange for which person
- Active trader placing limit orders: Kraken. Lower entry tier, earlier discounts, assets on platform count toward tiers, 400+ assets, and margin where you are eligible.
- New York or Maine resident: Gemini, by default; Kraken's licensing page excludes both states.
- Buy-and-hold with recurring purchases: either simple mode costs a spread; Kraken's fee is a published 1% that Kraken+ can waive, Gemini's is visible only at review.
- Stablecoin-heavy user: Gemini's 0.00% pairs beat Kraken's 0.20%.
- Stocks and crypto in one login (US): Kraken Pro's commission-free stocks and ETFs.
- Compliance-first saver: Gemini's trust charter, full-reserve statement and SOC exams.

FAQ
Is Kraken or Gemini cheaper for a small first purchase?
In the simple interfaces, Kraken prints a flat 1% plus a spread and Gemini prints no rate, only the fee on your review screen plus a spread, so compare the two review screens on the day. In the order-book interfaces Kraken Pro is cheaper at every published tier: 0.40% / 0.80% at Tier 1 against Gemini ActiveTrader's 0.600% / 1.200%.
Can I use Kraken if I live in New York?
Not at the time of writing: Kraken's licensing page says it does not offer services to residents of Maine or New York, and that if you move out of those states you can use your new address for regular verification. Gemini's user agreement assigns New York residents to its Gemini Trust Company agreement.
Does SIPC protection cover crypto on either exchange?
No. SIPC says it does not protect any digital or crypto asset that does not qualify as a security, and that it does not protect against the decline in value of your securities. Kraken's SIPC membership through Kraken Securities LLC applies to its stock brokerage, not to crypto balances.
Which has more coins?
Kraken Pro's page says 400+ assets; Gemini's Trust Center lists 99 cryptos and 655 trading pairs. Kraken's licensing page also restricts a long list of specific assets for US clients, so check the asset you want before funding.
Can I buy stocks on Kraken or Gemini?
On Kraken, yes, for US clients: Kraken Pro advertises commission-free trading in over 11,000 stocks and ETFs through Kraken Securities LLC, a FINRA and SIPC member. Gemini's fee index lists a separate Gemini Stocks schedule, but its figures did not render in a plain-text read, so none are printed here.
