Kraken Pro costs nothing extra, uses the same login and charges 0.40% maker / 0.80% taker at its entry tier against a flat 1% plus a spread in the regular app. When the app still makes sense, from Kraken's own fee pages checked October 2026.

Is Kraken Pro worth it compared to the regular Kraken app?

Yes, for almost anyone who can place a limit order: Kraken Pro costs nothing extra, uses the same login, and its entry tier is 0.40% maker and 0.80% taker, against a flat 1% fee plus a spread in the regular Kraken app (1.5% on custom orders), per Kraken's fee schedule (checked October 2026). The app only wins if you want one-tap recurring buys and will pay $4.99 a month for Kraken+, which waives the 1% on up to $10k of monthly volume while the spread still applies.

Everything below is drawn from Kraken's own fee schedule, Learn article and support pages as they read in October 2026, not from first-hand use of either interface, and none of it is investment advice. Investing involves risk, and Kraken's legal disclosures put it in five words: crypto trading involves risk of loss.

What Kraken Pro actually is

Kraken Pro is not a separate account or a paid tier. Kraken's support guide, last updated October 1, 2026, says all Kraken platforms, including Pro and Desktop, are free to use with standard trading fees applying by activity and tier, and that you can switch between platforms with the app switcher in the top-right corner of every web interface; on mobile you can install both apps and use them simultaneously. The Learn article says the same thing from the other direction: there is no cost to upgrade, both platforms use the same account, and Kraken Pro has its own app alongside the Kraken app. Kraken Desktop, a third surface for Pro users, is available for Windows, macOS and Linux.

What changes is the fee model and the toolset. Kraken's own framing is that Kraken is geared toward beginners and individual investors while Kraken Pro is for advanced and institutional traders, and that the app is perfect for beginners and casual traders with easy buying, selling and funding. In practice the dividing line is simpler than that: the app quotes you a price with the fee and spread baked in; Pro shows you an order book and charges a percentage that depends on whether you add liquidity or take it.

The fee gap, from Kraken's own schedule

Does this volume count toward tiers? No: Instant Buy volume does not countYes: discount tiers are assessed after every trade
Convert Small BalancesFixed 3% on amounts below the minimum order sizeNot offered on the order book

Three details on the schedule page matter. First, tiers are set by the better of 30-day spot volume or assets on platform, so a balance held on the exchange can qualify you for Tier 3 or Tier 4 without any trading. Second, the page warns that fees may be inaccurate if you're using a VPN; these figures were read from the US without one. Third, the futures columns do not apply to US customers, for whom Kraken says futures are not available.

Where Kraken's own pages disagree

If you have seen lower Kraken Pro numbers elsewhere, they were probably copied from Kraken itself. Kraken's Learn article "Kraken vs. Kraken Pro: Features and fees, explained", dated September 30, 2025, lists Pro spot fees as starting at 0.25% maker and 0.40% taker, and the support guide updated October 1, 2026 prints an exchange-fee range of "0% - 0.26%" for Pro. The fee schedule page, which both of those pages link to as the full schedule, shows Tier 1 at 0.40% maker and 0.80% taker today. This page follows the schedule because it is the document Kraken points to as governing, and every figure here is dated to October 2026 so you can re-check it against the live table.

Maker or taker: the habit that sets your real rate

The Pro saving depends on one habit. Kraken's support article on maker and taker fees explains that a limit order, where you choose the price your order will execute at, earns the lower maker fee if it rests on the book, while all market orders execute immediately and incur the taker fee. At Tier 1 that is the difference between 0.40% and 0.80%; at Tier 3 it is 0.22% against 0.38%. The same article repeats the rule that purchases made through the Buy Crypto widget or the Kraken app, and stablecoin or FX pairs on the order books, do not contribute to the fee-schedule 30-day volume, which is why app-only users never climb the tiers however much they buy. See current pricing at Kraken Pro to read the live table before your first limit order.

Features you only get on Pro

Kraken's support guide draws the feature grid plainly: the app has Instant buy and Pro does not, and Pro alone has advanced order options, margin trading, futures trading, price alerts, a customizable trading interface and a desktop application. The Learn article lists the order types: market, limit and recurring buy orders in the app; market, limit, take profit, stop loss, trailing and iceberg orders in Pro. Margin is a Pro-only product and, per the fee schedule, futures are not available to US customers at all; our margin trading explainer covers why leverage changes the risk rather than the fee. Staking and rewards appear on both surfaces, and our crypto staking guide covers how those programs work.

When the regular app is the right call

The app earns its place in three cases. If you buy a fixed amount on a schedule, the recurring-buy order type lives in the app, and Kraken+ removes the 1% fee on up to $10k of monthly volume for $4.99 a month or $49.99 a year, leaving the spread and any payment processing fees. If you are tidying up dust, the app's Convert Small Balances feature charges a fixed 3% below the minimum order size, which an order book cannot do at all. And if you simply do not want to read an order book, the app's price-certain quote is the product Kraken designed for that. Kraken's fee page is explicit that the Kraken+ waiver applies only to Buy, Sell or Convert in the app or on the web and does not include Spot, Futures, API or OTC trades on Kraken Pro, so the subscription is an app decision, not a Pro one.

Who Kraken serves

Kraken serves US clients under a FinCEN Money Services Business registration held by Payward Interactive, Inc., according to its licensing page, which also says that at this time Kraken does not offer services to residents of Maine or New York. Among the states it serves, crypto transfers are not available in Indiana, and fiat transfers are not available in Indiana, Louisiana, Massachusetts and Utah. If you are in New York, the Pro-versus-app question is moot and our Kraken vs Gemini head-to-head explains why Gemini, a New York trust company, is the usual alternative; you can see current pricing at Gemini directly.

Verdict

Kraken Pro is worth it because it costs nothing to switch to and nothing to use, while the app's fee is a flat 1% plus a spread that no amount of volume reduces. The only people who should stay in the app are recurring buyers on Kraken+ and anyone who values a price-certain quote over a lower percentage. Everyone else should open the Pro interface, place limit orders, and let the tier table do the rest. FAQ

Does Kraken Pro cost money?

No. Kraken's support guide says all Kraken platforms, including Pro and Desktop, are free to use, and its Learn article says there are no account setup or maintenance fees; you pay only the per-trade maker or taker percentage for your tier.

Can I switch back to the regular app after using Pro?

Yes. Both interfaces run on the same account and login, the web app switcher moves you between them, and Kraken says you can install both mobile apps and use them at the same time.

Does my Instant Buy volume count toward Kraken Pro's tiers?

No. The fee schedule states that volume generated with Instant Buy does not count towards the 30 day volume incentives, and the maker-taker support article adds that app purchases and stablecoin or FX pairs do not contribute either.

Is Kraken Pro available in New York?

Not at the time of writing: Kraken's licensing page lists Maine and New York as states where it does not offer services, Pro included.

What is the difference between a maker fee and a taker fee?

A maker order is a limit order that rests on the book and is matched later; a taker order, including every market order, matches immediately against an existing order. On Kraken Pro's Tier 1 the maker rate is 0.40% and the taker rate is 0.80%.
